BIOGRAPHY
Hugo, known as 'Raucus' (the Hoarse), was the eldest son of Eberhard IV, Graf vom Nordgau, and his wife Luitgard von Bidgau. He was count of the Nordgau, succeeding his father in 951, after Eberhard IV had abdicated in his favour and retired to his estate of Altorf, where he had hoped to found an abbey; the abbey of Altorf would be founded by Hugo V in 968.

That year Hugo gave to Aelis (Adelheid) de Bourgogne, spouse of Emperor Otto I 'the Great', the lordship of Seltz in Alsace, on which she founded a monastery in 991, and where she died on 16 December 999.

With his wife Luitgard or Hildegard von Metz, Hugo had three sons, Eberhard V, Hugo VI and Mattfried, and a daughter Gisela. Only Hugo VI is recorded with progeny.
