BIOGRAPHY
Godefroy, called 'le Captif' (the Prisoner), was the son of Gizelo, count of Bidgau and Methingau, and Uda von Metz. He was the brother of Adalberon, archbishop of Reims, who crowned Hugues Capet as king of France.

In 963 Godefroy married Mathilde von Sachsen, widow of Baudouin III, Graaf van Vlaanderen, and daughter of Hermann Billung, Herzog von Sachsen. He had at least eight children of whom Hermann and Gozelo would have progeny.

Godefroy was the founder of the house of Limburg or house of Ardennes-Verdun, a cadet branch of the house of Ardennes. He was always loyal to the Ottonians, to whom he was related through his maternal grandmother.

He appears as the new count of Verdun in 963, though already count of Bidgau and Methingau through inheritance since 959. In 974 he became count of Mons and Hainault jointly with Arnaud, count of Valenciennes, after the fall of Reginar IV, count in Hainault. Charles, duc de Lorraine, was a supporter of Reginar and defeated Godefroy and Arnaud at Mons in 976, where the former was captured.

After his release he was at the side of the Emperor Otto II fighting Lothar I, king of France, at Verdun in 985, but he was again taken captive and held for several years. He was released in 987 by Hugues Capet, king of France, who had long been supported by Geoffroy's family; Adalberon, Godefroy's brother, had crowned Hugues, and Godefroy was an enemy of Charles, duc de Lorraine, Hugues' Carolingian rival.

In 989 Godefroy was made a prisoner a third time by Heribert III, comte de Vermandois. He was liberated before 995, when he appears at the synod of Mousson. In 998 he lost his Hainault portion (the county of Mons) to Reginar IV, count in Hainault.

Godefroy died about 1002.
