BIOGRAPHY
Gebhard I was born early in the 11th century, the son of Hermann, Herzog von Schwaben, and Adelaide de Susa, Markgräfin von Susa, Herrin von Torino. Mentioned in 1043, he was the founder of the powerful house of the counts of Sulzbach, which had its seat at the castle of Sulzbach in Bavaria. The castle dates from the early 8th century, and was probably founded by the late-Merovingian/early-Carolingian kings.

According to legend today's city of Sulzbach-Rosenberg was founded when Gebhard, after a hunting accident, was able to quench his thirst at one of the springs at the foot of the castle rock. More plausibly, he was probably enfeoffed by Emperor Heinrich II with the castle and surrounding lands.

With an unnamed wife, Gebhard had several children of whom a son Gebhard II and daughter Adelheid would have progeny.
