BIOGRAPHY
Berengar I was born about 1080, the son of Gebhard II, Graf von Sulzbach, and Irmingard von Rott. About 1100 he married Adelheid von Lechsgemünd, widow of Marquart, Graf von Marquartstein and Ulrich, Graf von Passau, and daughter of Kuno von Lechsgemünd and Mechtild von Horburg. Adelheid died probably childless in 1105. About 1113 Berengar married Adelheid von Diessen, daughter of Otto II, Graf von Diessen, Graf von Thaming, and Justizia of Austria. They had at least six children, of whom Gebhard III and four daughters would have progeny, marrying into the highest circles. Gertrud married Konrad III von Schwaben, emperor-elect, Herzog von Franken; Bertha married Manuel I Komnenos, emperor of Byzantium; Lutgardis married Godfried II, duke of Lower-Lorraine, comte de Louvain; and Mathilde married Engelbert III, margrave of Istria and Tuscany.

Berengar was instrumental in the fall of Emperor Heinrich IV and the appointment of his son Heinrich V. From 1104 to 1106 he was frequently with Heinrich V as one of his key advisers in imperial affairs. Between 1108 and 1111 he took part in the campaigns in Hungary and Poland and his expedition to Rome. From January 1116 to the autumn of 1119 he is not recorded at Heinrich's court, but he was then at court until his death in 1125.

As part of the leadership group of an ecclesiastical reform circle extending over Bavaria, Swabia and Saxony, Berengar founded, among others, the religious community at Berchtesgaden, Baumburg and Kastl. He founded his first abbey, that of Berchtesgaden, on behalf of his mother Irmengard, according to legend in thanks for his father Gebhard II being saved after a hunting accident at the rock on which the Berchtesgaden collegiate church stands today. The Berchtesgaden estate had come to his mother from her first marriage to Engelbert V, Graf im Chiemgau, as her widow's seat, and she had vowed to found a religious community there. In 1101, the year of his mother's death, Berengar appointed the canon Eberwin as the first provost of the abbey. Under his guidance Berengar sent to Berchtesgaden three Augustinian canons and four lay brothers from the abbey of Rottenbuch, at the time the parent abbey of the Augustinians in Old Bavaria. Together with his half-brother Kuno, Graf von Horburg, Berengar sought the papal blessing for the founding of the abbey. About 1102 Kuno and Eberwin travelled to Rome on behalf of Berengar, and they received Pope Paschal II's blessing in writing. Soon after the Lateran Council (March-April 1102), on 12 May 1102 Berengar was also granted the papal blessing for the abbey of Kastl, that he established in 1102/3 together with Graf Friedrich von Kastl-Habsburg, his son Otto and Gräfin Liutgard von Zähringen, sister of Gebhard III von Zähringen, bishop of Constance. That year Pope Paschal also granted his blessing for the founding of the abbery of Baumburg. The foundation of so many abbeys stretched even Berengar's considerable resources, and Berchtesgaden in particular was inhospitable in winter, but the institutions were eventually consolidated into two, and firmly established.

Berengar died on 3 December 1125.
