Note	BIOGRAPHY Hugues, born about 920, was the son of Hugues I, comte de Maine. His mother may have been a daughter of Gauzlin II, who had been count of Maine. Hugues became count of Maine on his father's death between 939 and 955. By a wife whose name is not recorded, but who may have been from the Vermandois family, Hugues had several children of whom Hugues III would have progeny. Like his father, Hugues II was one of the first vassals of his uncle Hugues 'the Great', duke of The Franks, comte de Paris. The latter died in 956, leaving an infant son, the future Hugues Capet, and Hugues took the opportunity to free himself from his overlordship, as did Foulques II 'the Good', comte d'Anjou, and Thibaut I 'the Deceiver', comte de Blois et Chartres. Thereafter he formed an alliance with Eudes I, comte de Blois, the son of Thibaut I 'the Deceiver', in a coalition against the Capetians. Siegfried, bishop of Le Mans, who was faithful to Hugues Capet, had to flee his city and took refuge with Bouchard, comte de Vendôme, to whom he gave domains that formed Lower Vendôme. Still alive in 980, Hugues died before 991.

BIOGRAPHY
Hugues, born about 920, was the son of Hugues I, comte de Maine. His mother may have been a daughter of Gauzlin II, who had been count of Maine. Hugues became count of Maine on his father's death between 939 and 955. By a wife whose name is not recorded, but who may have been from the Vermandois family, Hugues had several children of whom Hugues III would have progeny.

Like his father, Hugues II was one of the first vassals of his uncle Hugues 'the Great', duke of The Franks, comte de Paris. The latter died in 956, leaving an infant son, the future Hugues Capet, and Hugues took the opportunity to free himself from his overlordship, as did Foulques II 'the Good', comte d'Anjou, and Thibaut I 'the Deceiver', comte de Blois et Chartres.

Thereafter he formed an alliance with Eudes I, comte de Blois, the son of Thibaut I 'the Deceiver', in a coalition against the Capetians. Siegfried, bishop of Le Mans, who was faithful to Hugues Capet, had to flee his city and took refuge with Bouchard, comte de Vendôme, to whom he gave domains that formed Lower Vendôme.

Still alive in 980, Hugues died before 991.
