BIOGRAPHY
Rotger was count of Maine from 886 to 900. He is the founder of the second house in Maine, sometimes referred to as the Hugonides. His family is not known from contemporary documents, and recent studies have proposed several hypotheses. The genealogist Christian Settipani identifies him with a Count Rotger who intervened in 892 to help his uncle Hugues, comte de Bourges, and considers this Hugues to have been Rotger's maternal uncle.

Rotger was married to Rothilde de France, daughter of Emperor Charles 'the Bald', and he was thus close to the royal family. He and Rothilde had a son Hugues I who would have progeny, and a daughter Judith who married Hugues 'the Great', duke of The Franks, comte de Paris, but did not have progeny. They may also have had a daughter Rothilde who was abbess of Bouxières-aux-Dames from 937 to 965.

In 885 Ragenold, marquis of Neustria and count of Maine, was killed by the Normans. At this time the Rorgonides, the family descending from Rorgon or Rorico, comte de Rennes et Maine, were represented by teenagers, and Emperor Charles III 'the Fat' preferred to confer the march of Neustria on one of his followers, Heinrich of the family of Popponides, and the county of Maine on Rotger.

The Rorgonides reconciled with the Robertians and Robert's brother Eudes became king of France, succeeding Charles 'the Fat'. Rotger was expelled from Le Mans in 893 and replaced by Gauzlin II of the Rorgonides, son of Gauzfrid and cousin of Ragenold.

Rotger reclaimed the county in 895, but was particularly violent towards his subjects and the Church, leading to protests by the bishop of Le Mans. He died shortly thereafter before October 900.
