BIOGRAPHY
Gijsbrecht van Nijenrode, Heer van Nijenrode, was the son of Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel, Heer van Nijenrode, the builder of Nijenrode Castle. It appears he took the name of the castle.

After the murder of Floris V, count of Holland, in 1296 the county of Holland was in turmoil. Jan d'Avesnes, count of Hainault, was appointed governor of Holland and guardian of the 15-year-old son of Floris, after whose death in 1299 he became count of Holland as Jan II. In 1304 Gijsbrecht joined Jan II d'Avesnes who, together with the bishop of Utrecht, defended both Holland and Utrecht against the count of Flanders. The hero of this encounter was Witte van Haamstede, the bastard son of Floris V, who defeated the Flemish at Manpad near Haarlem and forced them to depart from both Holland and Utrecht.

On 15 August 1311 Gijsbrecht placed the castle under the protection of Willem III, count of Holland, the son of Jan II d'Avesnes, and received the castle from Willem III in lien provided it remained an open house to Willem. Because of this the castle came within the sphere of influence of Holland and was attacked repeatedly by the bishops of Utrecht. Willem III, in a letter to Gijsbrecht in the same year, acknowledged still to be owing 2000 'black tournois' for the damage suffered in the defence of Holland.

By an unnamed wife, Gijsbrecht had a son Gerard Splinter who would have progeny. It is not recorded when Gijsbrecht died.
