BIOGRAPHY
Gijsbrecht was the son of Gerard Splinter van Nijenrode, Heer van Nijenrode, and Maria van Persijn van Velsen, and grandson of his namesake Gijsbrecht van Nijenrode, Heer van Nijenrode, son of the builder of Nijenrode Castle. As his parents married in 1332 he was probably born about the mid 1330s, though his year of birth is not recorded. With his first wife Belia van Arkel van Leyenburg, daughter of Otto van Heukelum van Leyenburg, Gijsbrecht had a son Otto and daughter Elsabe who would have progeny. He had other children who could have been illegitimate, of whom a son Jan is recorded. Gijsbrecht later married a daughter of Otto van der Poel, but it appears that this marriage did not result in progeny.

Gijsbrecht, lord of Nijenrode, Velzen and Poel, bailiff of Keppermerland and Friesland, and marshal of Eemland, was a knight in the true sense of the word, whose story brings the Middle Ages to life. In the ongoing conflict dominating the Low Countries in the mid 14th century Gijsbrecht sided with Wilhelm V of Bavaria, count of Holland and Hainault, in the civil war against his mother Margaretha, Gravin van Holland, Zeeland en Henegouwen, over the inheritance to the counties of Holland and Hainault. In 1351 he besieged and captured the castle of Brederode. In 1355 Nijenrode was his base for an expedition to Bunschoten, where he put 70 of his enemies to the sword. The inevitable revenge of his adversary Jan IV van Arkel, the bishop of Utrecht, resulted in the destruction of Weesp and Muiden (two towns south of Amsterdam). During Gijsbrecht's next expedition he succeeded in burning nearby Soest to the ground. The ensuing battle left him seriously wounded, and lances had to be used to carry him away from the battleground.

Misfortune befell Gijsbrecht when his patron Wilhelm V went mad, putting Gijsbrecht firmly in the losing camp. He had to pay his allegiance to Wilhelm with a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and St. Catherine's grave on Mount Sinai. However the pilgrimage did not instil a love of peaceful pursuits. Within a year of returning home, Gijsbrecht again took up the sword, and battle remained a constant during the rest of his turbulent life. Nijenrode Castle, his home base, escaped damage, despite being besieged by the burghers and archers of Utrecht. Meanwhile, he had also entered into conflict with the lord of Ruwiel Castle. The two knights settled their differences in the time-honoured way: with the marriage of Jan Gijsbrechts Dorlant, the possibly illegitimate son of Gijsbrecht, and Ruwiel's daughter.

The new coat of arms which Gijsbrecht adopted in 1392, merging the arms of his great grandfather Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel, the builder of Nijenrode Castle, with those of his mother Maria van Persijn, continues to be used by the municipality of Nijenrode to this day. Even old age did not quench Gijsbrecht's love of battle; he took part in sieges until his death in August or November 1396.
