BIOGRAPHY
Walram III was born about 1085, the son of Heinrich I, Graf von Limburg. Called 'Paganus' (the Pagan), probably due to a late baptism, he was duke of Limburg and count of Arlon from his father's death in about 1119 until his own twenty years later.

About 1100 he married Judith van Wassenberg, heiress of Wessenberg, daughter of Gerhard I Flaminius, count of Gelre, count of Wassenberg, and Clémence de Poitou, heiress of Gleiberg. Their son Heinrich and daughter Margaretha would have progeny.

He was given the duchy of Lower Lorraine by Lothar von Supplinburg, duke of Saxony, after the latter's accession as King of the Germans in 1125.

Walram's father Heinrich had been forced to yield the duchy to Godfried I, comte de Louvain, on the succession of Heinrich V as emperor, but had kept the ducal title. With the coming of Lothar von Supplinburg, Godfried was forced to yield the duchy to Walram. Godfried was not willing to do so and war broke out, especially over disputes about authority over the abbey of Sint-Truiden. In 1129 Walram and the bishop of Liège, Alexandre de Juliers, destroyed Godfried's forces at Wilde. His rule was actual from there on. Though Walram and Godfried eventually reconciled, Godfried maintained the ducal title, as Heinrich had.

In 1129 Walram was made master of the forest of Duisburg. In 1139 Emperor Lothar von Supplinburg died and Walram supported Konrad III von Schwaben, Herzog von Franken, who was elected King of the Germans. He remained faithful to the new king until his death shortly thereafter on 6 August 1139. He was succeeded in Lorraine by Godfried II, comte de Louvain, son of Godfried I, and in Limburg by his son Heinrich II.
