BIOGRAPHY
The domain of the lords of Arkel was in the county of Teisterbant between the Lek and Merwede rivers. This domain included not only its capital, Gorinchem, but also the towns of Heukelom, Asperen, Leerdam, Gasperen, Hagestein, Haasdrecht and Schoonrewoerd as well as Everstein, Reinestein, Bergambacht, Zoelen, and Oosterwijk. Somewhere between 1247 and 1267, Gorinchem became the property of the lords of Arkel. Their castle probably sat on the left bank of the Linge across from the present church in Arkel. A second castle, which was built in the 13th century to the east of Gorinchem, was destroyed in 1412 by Willem VI, count of Holland, in his war with Jan V, the last lord of Arkel.

Jan I is the first recorded lord of Arkel. He was born about 1233, the son of Herbaren van der Lede, knight, and Aleid van Heusden. Jan's ancestors originally came from Lede and had land between the Lek and Merwede rivers. He married Berta van Ochten, daughter of Ricold, Heer van Ochten, and his wife Jutta. Jan and Berta had a son Jan II who would have progeny.

Jan is mentioned between 1253 and 1264. He had a reputation for great strength, and was said to have lifted himself and his horse off the ground by pulling with his arms on the wooden beams in the town gates of Gorinchem.

Jan died in 1272, and was buried in Gorinchem.
