BIOGRAPHY
Stephen was born about 1096, the son of Stephen, count of Blois and Chartres, and Adela of Normandy. In 1125 he married Matilda, comtesse de Boulogne et de Lens, daughter of Eustace III, comte de Boulogne et de Lens, and Mary of Scotland, daughter of Malcolm III Canmore, king of Scots. Stephen and Matilda had five children of whom only Marie de Blois would have progeny. His daughter by an unnamed mistress would also have progeny.

When Henry I resolved to settle the crown of England on his daughter Matilda, Stephen with the other nobles swore fealty to her, but on Henry's death he claimed the crown. Attempting to strengthen his position with the help of mercenaries, he made more enemies than friends by the favours he heaped on some of the great lords. King David of Scotland invaded the north on Matilda's behalf and retained Cumberland. The first powerful enemy King Stephen made was Robert, earl of Gloucester, an illegitimate son of Henry I who became Matilda's military leader. He next quarrelled with the clergy. The realm then fell into anarchy, with the barons plundering and burning at will.

In 1139 Matilda landed at Arundel; in 1141 she took Stephen prisoner at Lincoln and was acknowledged as queen, but her harshness and greed soon alienated much of England. The people of London rose and she fled to Winchester. In November 1141 Stephen regained his liberty in exchange for Robert de Caen, 1st earl of Gloucester, and 1142 saw him again in the ascendant. In 1148 Matilda left England, but her son Henry forced Stephen to acknowledge him as his successor.

King Stephen died 25 October 1154 in Dover. He may have died from peritonitis, for Gervase, monk of the priory of Christ Church, Canterbury, wrote: 'The King was suddenly seized with pain in the iliac region, along with an old discharge from haemorrhoids.' He was succeeded by Matilda's son Henry II.
