In de voorafgaande bijdragen is vast komen te staan dat de
genealogie Van Egmond zoals die door Dek en Beelaerts van Blokland
werden beschreven op diverse plekken rammelde. Voor verschillende
zwakke plekken heb ik een aannemelijk alternatief gegeven. Daarnaast
heb ik bepaalde zaken wat scherper gedateerd of van een betere
chronologie voorzien.

De tak Egmond-van Merenstein verdient echter nog wat extra aandacht.
Stamvader van deze zijtak was Gerard van Egmond, een jongere zoon
van Wouter I "de kwade" van Egmond. Gerard overleed op 24 februari
1217 nalatende kinderen. Uit zijn huwelijk ca.1205 met (hoogstwaar-
schijnlijk) een dochter van Arnold van Rijswijk verwekte hij een
vijftal zonen: Wouter, Arnold, Lubbert, Claas, Menso.

Wouter van Egmond was in 1248 voogd over zijn onmondige neef Willem
II, heer van Egmond. In hetzelfde jaar wordt hij als ridder
betiteld. Wouter van Egmond wordt in 1250 door Simon van Haarlem als
zijn zwager genoemd. Aangezien in 1248 graaf Willem II van Holland
diens grafelijke curtis te Heemskerk, bekend onder de benaming
Hofland, overdraagt aan de ridders Simon van Haarlem en Wouter van
Egmond, mag worden verondersteld dat toen al een verwantschaps-
betrekking tussen beiden zal hebben bestaan.

Wouter van Egmond's vrouw was volgens Groesbeek een Beatrix van
Haarlem, de zus van Sijmon van Haarlem. Beatrix wordt in 1263 nog
vermeld met haar broers Wouter en Willem van Haarlem. Simon,
Beatrix, Wouter en Willem van Haarlem zullen vermoedelijk kinderen
zijn van een Wouter van Haarlem Simonszn.(ca.1215-1237). Heer Wouter
van Egmond zal dus in of voor 1248 gehuwd zijn met Beatrix van
Haarlem.

Middels dit huwelijk zal hij bezit hebben verworven in Beverwijk.
Zijn oudste zoon Gerard van Egmond bezat daar namelijk het huis
(kasteel) Uterwijk (Oosterwijk) dat nabij de grens met Heemskerk
gesitueerd is. Dat dit bezit afkomstig dient te zijn van de Van
Haarlem's is niet verwonderlijk aangezien dezen de regionale
grootgrondbezitters waren. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat in
1248 de zwagers Simon en Wouter de grafelijke hof te Heemskerk
aankochten. Op 10 maart 1250 gaf Simon van Haarlem zijn deel aan
Wouter van Egmond in leen over. Op deze plek verrees later het huis
(kasteel) Merestein.

Heer Wouter van Egmond, in de kronieken bekend als "stoutkind", en
Beatrix van Haarlem, hebben minstens drie kinderen gehad: Gerard,
Floris, en Wouter. Gerard van Egmond (1274-1319), zal gezien diens
vernoeming naar zijn grootvader de oudste zoon zijn geweest. Hij
bewoonde het huis Uterwijk en huwde met Aleid van Brederode, dochter
van Willem van Brederode en Hildegonde van Voorne. Zijn weduwe Aleid
werd in 1320 Uterwijk genoemd naar haar woning. Ze overleed pas op
25 juli 1333.

Floris van Egmond komt in de bewaardgebleven informatiebronnen niet
voor onder zijn familienaam maar wel onder het patroniem "heren
Wouterszoon". Hoe hij aan zijn voornaam gekomen is iets waar ik
slechts naar kan gissen. Dat laat ik dan ook gaarne over aan
anderen. Aangezien het huis Merestein in het bezit van zijn
nageslacht aantoonbaar is mogen we wellicht veronderstellen dat het
grondbezit waarop dit huis verrees aan hem bij deling is
toegevallen. Het Kastelenteam wijst op het feit dat de kastelen
Uterwijk en Merestein aan weerszijde van de grens Beverwijk-
Heemskerk gesitueerd zijn, waarbij de suggestie van Groesbeek
gevolgd wordt dat het grondgebied waarop beide kastelen werden
opgericht oorspronkelijk één geheel zal hebben gevormd.

Floris van Egmond was in 1296 kastelein (burggraaf) van Medemblik en
in 1298 baljuw van het Hoogwouderambacht en Drechterland. Omdat zijn
zoon Albrecht in 1306 als een belendend eigenaar in Beverwijk wordt
genoemd mogen we er van uitgaan dat deze toen civielrechtelijk reeds
meerderjarig (min.14 jaar) zal zijn geweest. Anders had men de
belendende eigenaar wel als "het kind Van Egmond" beschreven.
Albrecht Floris heren Wouterszoon zal dus minimaal uit 1292 dateren.
Zijn moeder is onbekend maar gezien de opmerkelijke voornaam
Albrecht voor haar zoon zou ik haar gaan zoeken als dochter van de
een of andere edelman met naam Albrecht. Groesbeek noemt daarbij als
mogelijke verwant een Albert van Velsen. Uit vernoemings oogpunt zou
ze tevens voor Albrecht een oudere en wellicht jonggestorven broer
met naam Wouter verwachten. Floris van Egmond zal derhalve ergens in
de jaren tachtig zijn gehuwd.

Wouter van Egmond is een nieuwe element in de stamboom. Groesbeek
heeft hem aan de vergetelheid ontrukt. Deze Wouter ging door het
leven als Wouter van Haarlem maar gebruikte het Egmondse wapenzegel.
Hij zal naar zijn moederlijke grootvader Wouter van Haarlem zijn
vernoemd. Volgens Groesbeek behoorde het losse wapenzegel van deze
Wouter (gend. van Haarlem) van Egmond dan ook niet bij de oorkonde
van 1237 waarin inderdaad een Wouter van Haarlem getuigde. Met de
argumentatie van Groesbeek is niets mis, en ik volg hierin dan ook
zijn mening.
