Note	BIOGRAPHY Gijsbrecht was born about 1200, the son of Gijsbrecht II van Amstel, Heer van Amstel. He was lord of Amstelland. Gijsbrecht married twice. His first wife was Beerta van Oegstgeest, and the second was (Aleid) van Cuyck, daughter of Albrecht van Cuyck, Stadgraaf van Utrecht, Heer van Herpen en Merum, and Heilwig van Merheim. He had at least three children who would have progeny, his successor Gijsbrecht IV, Arnoud who founded the IJsselstein branch of the family, and Elisabeth. It is not certain which wife was the mother of which of the children. Gijsbrecht was part of the 10-member ministry of the bishop of Utrecht. He became involved in politics in Holland, and was mentioned among the 'fideles et familiares' of Willem II, Graaf van Holland, the emperor-elect. Presumably under his reign the dam was built over the river Amstel from which Amsterdam derives its name. In 1247 he witnessed the presentation of a number of estates by Willem II to a family member at Delft. Under Gijsbrecht's guidance these lands were later sold to the Teutonic Order. In 1251 Gijsbrecht joined farmers in a revolt against Hendrik van Vianden, the bishop of Utrecht. On 16 June 1252 the bishop captured Gijsbrecht and his ally Herman V van Woerden, and had Gijsbrecht tied to a horse and dragged him through the streets of Utrecht and surrounding areas. On the same day the emperor-elect Willem II arrived in Utrecht and, to restore peace, Gijsbrecht was released but died shortly afterwards because of the treatment he had received.

Gijsbrecht was born about 1200, the son of Gijsbrecht II van Amstel, Heer van Amstel. He was lord of Amstelland.

Gijsbrecht married twice. His first wife was Beerta van Oegstgeest, and the second was (Aleid) van Cuyck, daughter of Albrecht van Cuyck, Stadgraaf van Utrecht, Heer van Herpen en Merum, and Heilwig van Merheim. He had at least three children who would have progeny, his successor Gijsbrecht IV, Arnoud who founded the IJsselstein branch of the family, and Elisabeth. It is not certain which wife was the mother of which of the children.
