BIOGRAPHY
Like his father, Ragnar Lodbrok Sigurdsson, Bjorn is better known to legend than to history. The _Annales Bertiniani_ and the _Chronicon Fontanellense_ tell of a Viking leader named Berno who pillaged on the Seine in the 850s, and in about 1070 Guillaume de Jumièges referred to him as 'Bier Costae ferreae' (Ironside) who was 'Lotbroci regis filio' (son of king Lodbrok).

The _Ragnarssona páttr_ tells that Björn was the son of Viking Ragnar Lodbrok and Aslang/Aslaug, the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild, and that he had the brothers Hvitserk, Ivar 'the Boneless' and Sigurd 'Snake-in-the-Eye', and the half-brothers Eric and Agnar. Other siblings linked to him include Halfdan 'White Shirt', Ragnhildir, Alof/Olaf and Ubbe/Ubbi.

According to the Norse legends Björn and his brothers left Sweden to conquer Zealand, Reidgotaland (now Jutland), Gotland, Öland and all the minor islands. For a time they settled at Lejre (Lethra) with Ivar 'the Boneless' as their leader.

Björn's main activities with his band of Vikings appear to date from the mid 850s to 862. In 856-7 he was on the Seine, and some of the ill deeds of the Vikings there cited by Ermentarius have been attributed to him.

He is associated with the Vikings who established a base on the island of Oissel on the Seine, in what is now Normandy. Charles 'the Bald' eventually confined them there by siege, but the treachery of his noblemen, who invited Louis 'the German' to enter the West Kingdom and 'help' his brother Charles, worked to the Vikings' advantage and led to the raising of the siege after twelve weeks.

The next development was the arrival of another Viking band under the command of Weland, to whom Charles eventually offered 3,000 pounds of silver to rid him of their Oissel compatriots. For reasons profitable to both Charles and Weland it took a long time to collect the sum. It involved a graduated tax on farms and land, on churches, and on merchants. Eventually Weland received not 3,000 but 5,000 pounds of silver as well as corn and cattle, and even then the royal accounts showed a surplus. Weland kept his word, and the Oissel Vikings were besieged a second time. They were not short of money, but soon ran out of food and paid Weland 6,000 pounds of silver to let them get away.

Bjorn's men were released in time for one of the more spectacular enterprises of the century, the four-year cruise of Bjorn and the Viking chieftain Hastein with sixty-two ships to Spain, North Africa, and Italy, and possibly still farther into the Mediterranean. The Moors captured two of their ships, laden with gold, silver and prisoners off the coast of Spain. However, they continued to Spain and France with a vast booty and many captives; their losses in men and ships had been light. When they came back to Scandinavia, Björn 'Ironside' took Uppsala.

In 865 Viking attacks were launched on East Anglia. This was the starting point of an attack by a united army led by several sons of Ragnar Lodbrok which captured York in November 866.
