BIOGRAPHY Foulques IV rebelled against his elder brother Geoffrey III 'the Bearded', who had succeeded his uncle Geoffrey II Martel, son of Foulques III, as comte d'Anjou. Foulques IV, discontented over having inherited only a few small appanages, took advantage of the general discontent aroused by Geoffrey III's inept rule, seized Saumur and Angers in 1067, and cast Geoffrey first into prison at Sablé and later in Chinon castle in 1068. He persuaded the French king Philippe I to accept this arrangement by ceding his paternal heritage of Gâtinais to the king. His later years were troubled by rebellion from his elder son Geoffrey IV Martel, but he secured the countship of Maine for his second son Foulques V by arranging his marriage to Eremburge, heiress of Hélie I de la Flèche, comte de Maine. Foulques IV died on 14 April 1109. He was succeeded by Foulques V, who married Eremburge in the following year. |
