BIOGRAPHY
Ulrich was the son of Poppo II, Graf von Weimar, Markgraf in Krain, and Hadamut von Istrien. He was margrave of Carniola and Carinthia from 1045 and margrave of Istria from 1060.

Ulrich's uncle Wilhelm, Markgraf von Meissen, was betrothed to Zofia of Hungary, daughter of Béla I, king of Hungary, and his first wife Richeza/Ryksa of Poland. However he died in 1062 as he was about to fetch his bride. Ulrich then stepped in and married her. They had two sons Poppo III and Ulrich II, and two daughters Richgardis and Adelaide, of whom only Poppo III and Richgardis are recorded with progeny.

Ulrich expanded his Istrian landholdings as far as Fiume ('Merania'), against opposition from Aquilea and Venice. On 31 July 1064 Emperor Heinrich IV donated land _in pago Histrie...in comitatu Odalrici marchionis_ ('in the country of Istria... in the county of Margrave Ulric') to _prefato Odalrico marchioni_ ('the prefect Ulrich, margrave'). Again on 5 March 1067 Heinrich donated land _in pago Istria in marcha Odalrici marchionis_ ('in the country of Istria in the march of Margrave Ulrich'), this time to the church in Freising. Ulrich was recorded as _Odalricus marchio Carentinorum_ ('Ulrich, margrave of the Carinthians') on his death.

Ulrich's uncle Otto I died in 1067, and Ulrich inherited from him the nominal title of Graf von Weimar. However, in the struggle over the inheritance of the counts of Ebersberg, who died out in 1045 with Adalbero II von Ebersberg, Ulrich could not make any major gains. Similarly he could not gain a significant foothold in Thüringen; this was achieved after 1090 by his son Ulrich II.

Ulrich died on 6 March 1070. Graf Markwart IV von Eppenstein, related to the Ebersbergs, became guardian of Ulrich's children and ruled the margraviates for them.
